Interesting Facts Concerning New Mail-carrying Vehicles Used at Liverpool.

RECENTLY an innovation has been 1%. made at Liverpool by the employ. ment in the mail-carrying services of J. Blake id Co.. Ltd., of two electric vehicles, both tif them Ward one-tonners, model W.A., fitted with 42 cell I.M.V.6 Exide batteriet., G.E.C. motors and controllers, and Sheldon springsand axles.

Their work consists of carrying the parcel mail, running between Lime Street Station and the General Post Office and between the General Post, Oth..e and the Liverpool landing stage, ard is spread over 13 hours.

AlthOugh not so fast as the petroldriven vehicle, we are assured by Messrs. Blake and Co. that the electric have had no difficulty in keeping to schedule time, and no trouble of any description has been experienced with them. Of course, the vehicles have only been in use for a short while, and it is, perhaps, a little premature to talk of troubles. Nevertheless, their running has been most creditable.

The petrol cars, of course, can easily beat schedule time, and there is, therefore, a bandency for drivers to loiter until the last moment before setting off on their journey, and then to race the heart out of the engine in order to get in punctually. This is detrimental to the vehicle, although it enables the driver to do his job in the shortest possible time.

Accurate running costs of these vehicles are not yet, available,. for they are charged at the Liverpool Corporation electricity plank where only one vehicle can be charged at a time; but approximately, and as far as ears be

• gathered, the current consumed is 41. units for 13 hours for each vehicle. Fuel consumption on a petrol-driven vehicle for a like amount of work would be four gallons. Taking electricity at 2d. per unit, and petrol at 3s. 11d, per gallon, there is thus a saving on fuel alone of 8s. 1.0d. per day. But this is not all, for the elaric casts less for oil, general maintenance' and repairs.

Messrs. 3. Blake and Co. are installing a 16 kilowatt plant, capable of charging three vehicles at one time, and when this has been completed, it is hoped to make the electric vehicle postal service even more efficient—and cheaper, too. On mail-carrying service the electric vehicle should prove eminently suitable, for the distances to be covered are usually short and made up of straight-through runs.
