Commissioner Stanley Clinton Davis has promised to monitor lorry hijackings to see what legislation might be necessary in response to a call for a Community-wide investigation into lorry thefts.
European Parliament member Bill Newton-Dunn told the Commission last week that a lorry disappears every other day in the UK: "I want to know if this happens in other member states," he says.
Newton-Dunn warns that tippers and lorry-mounted cranes are favourite hijack targets: "We don't know if they are being stripped down or shipped out to foreign parts," he says. "We do know that it is costing transport firms in the UK money."
