an average of 9,500 breakdowns a day. Recoveries by the Relay Service of seriously broken down or accident-damaged vehicles averaged 700 a day.
The peak was reached during January's arctic weather when an all-time record of 60,000 breakdowns were handled in three days.
Overall, during the first four months of the year, demand for the AA assistance increased by 16% to 1,132,000 breakdowns and 114,000 Relay recoveries of which more than three quarters were completed in a single journey.
The AA says that membership is booming. I say it's crashing, pranging and banging.
• Bedford's Mil!brook test track was the venue for a Mercedes-Benz (UK) dealer event last week. Guest speaker was Hans Tauscher, managing director of Mercedes-Benz (UK).
Tauscher began his speech acknowledging the recent ups and downs in the commercial vehicle industry.
Observing the shutdowns, mergers and collaborations Tauscher reported that ". . . circumstances have resulted in some unforseeable bed-fellows in our industry lately, and as I think they are all going to discover shortly: 'one good turn gets most of the bedclothes" . .
