licence held by Matrixgrade of Nottingham, but only in respect of one vehicle for two years. The company had previously held a licence authorising four vehicles.
Vehicle examiner Allan Burton said the company had been operating two vehicles in January. He imposed an immediate prohibition on a Leyland which had a number of faults including defective brakes.
Director John Bridon said the Leyland had been a disaster from the day it was purchased: money had continually been spent on it. The only vehicle now operated, a Mercedes, was maintained by a commercial garage. When asked why there were no inspection records Bridon said they were the responsibility of the garage.
Boyd said the Leyland was a disaster and a disgrace and danger to the public. As a Road Haulage Association member the company should have known better than to put a vehicle on the road in that condition. He did not care who did the maintenance or who filled in the records — it was the company's responsibility to keep them for 15 months and to produce them.
Renewing the licence after various undertakings were given in relation to maintenance, Boyd said the company must be very careful in the future.
