Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Canterbury-based William Gollop has completed what it believes to be the first thirdaxle conversion on a Mercedes-Benz 164-4S tractive unit. The new 6x2 will go into service with Thomas Transport on the Isle of Sheppey.

The tag axle conversion involves reducing the 4 x 2 1644's original 3.5m wheelbase by 350nmi and fitting an SAF AR313 tag axle with lifting air suspension, increasing the outer axle spread to 4.14m.

The extra axle adds £4,300 to the 4 x 2's 247,000 retail price and 900kg to its kerbweight. The tag axle, and a 340 litre steel saddle tank to supplement the reduced 400 litre main tank raises the 6x2 1644's kerbweight to 8,400kg.

Now Glossop plans a pusher-type conversion on a 1635 for a timber haulier. Mercedes dealer Sparshatts of Sittingbourne has orders for a further three tag-axle 1644s.
