Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE article by Mr. C. Y. Hardie on traffic handling by

British Road Services (The Commercial Motor, May 9), in -referring to the new Dundee depot broke off at what is, to me, a most interesting point. He did not tell us how goods are booked outwards. The usual B.R.S. method is to book from the goods and not from customers' notes, and in many instances as vehicles are loading.

Are goods taken out of the pallets at Dundee for this purpose, after the second sorting, and put hack again until the outgoing vehicles are ready to load, or are they booked as the vehicles are loading? If so, does this mean manhandling all packages from the floor of the depot into the vans? If the booking is done before the vans are ready to load, where do the drivers or other loaders do their sorting in order that vehicle shall be correctly loaded in delivery order? Does not the absence of a deck make this more difficult?

In most depots like Dundee one finds the local vans all loading together in the morning. If the nine c. and d. vehicles at Dundee do this, how are fork trucks allocated to lift the pallets to tailboard level, or are they used only to lift heavy items? If the latter, does it not mean that someone has to do a lot of climbing in and out of the vans, and does this not affect the labour force required?

Your caption to the plan of the Dundee depot refers to "further sorting before final dispatch." Where exactly, and how, is this done?

Fuel Tankers Which Record Deliveries

HAVING at last got round to reading my copy of The Commercial Motor dated April 25, I was somewhat amused to read on page 373 of a new type of fuel tanker which is being used by Burnett and Hallamshire Fuel, Ltd.

It may interest you to know that vehicles similar to this have been in use for some years in London and the south of England, and we have been operating them for five years. They are fitted with up to 120 ft. of reeled hose, together with meters and ticket printers.
