nISASTER for Industries Group Sales,

Ltd., representing 75 British manufacturers, at the Poznan International Trade Fair in Poland, has been averted by Guy Motors, Ltd.

Before the London dock strike began. I.G.S. had shipped some 20 tons of material to the Fair but other equipment, without which stands could not be completed, became strike-bound at the docks and missed the last available ship to Poland. The dockers, however, on patriotic grounds, released this equipment, and it was arranged that it should be sent by road, using the cross-Channel ferry to Antwerp.

A Guy Warrior oil-engined 8-wooer, which will be both exhibited and used as a demonstration vehicle, was borrowed to take the load. This set out on Tuesday and must reach Poznan by tomorrow. It will travel at high speed with maximum payload over surfaces ranging from road to track, but its six Michelin D.20 Metallic tyres have a carrying capacity of more than 15 tons, giving an ample reserve of strength.

The British Embassy will anxiously await the arrival of the vehicle, as it is also carrying 30 cwt. of whisky and soft drinks for the official reception by the British ambassador to the heads of the Polish Government.

MOBILE TELEPHONE BOXES ON BEDFORD

AMOBILE public call office containing 10 telephone booths was put into service last week by the G.P.O. in the north-east. Based on a Bedford chassis, it is the second vehicle of its type in this country. The booths have acoustically insulated partitions and seats, and can be used either on direct-exchange lines or a coin-box system. There is a small office for an assistant.

A London railway disaster brought the need for such a vehicle to the attention of the Post Office, for within seconds of the accident all local telephone services were congested. The new outfit is primarily intended for emergency use, but will also be employed at public events such as race meetings.

It is 25 ft. 3 in. long, 7 ft. 6 in.. wide and 9 ft. 3 in. high. The prototype was built at the G.P.O. workshops at Kidbrooke, and the final version went into service after being shown to a conference of postmasters at Scarborough, last week.
