UTSERS of mechanical-handling equipment have formed the Institute of Material Handling, with Mr. T. Mott (Vauxhall Motors, Ltd.) as the first chairman, Mr. L Bright (Joseph Lucas, Ltd.) as deputy chairman and Mr. A. F. Much (1.C.I., [Ad.) as treasurer.

A•provisional council of 16 members has been elected, among them being Mr. A. M. Davis (S.P.D., Ltd.). Its first meeting will be held at the end of June, when a constitution and rules will be drawn up. The secretary is Mr. Maurice W. Paynter, A.C.C.S., 20-21, Took's Court, Cursitor Street, London, E.C.4.

The aims of the new Institute are stated as being to represent users, rather than manufacturers, of mechanicalhandling equipment, to facilitate the exchange of information and the review of handling technique. Those joining .before June 30 this year can become founder members of the Institute, it is stated.

Membership of the Institute will be confined to individuals and will not include corporate bodies.

Canadian trucks with steel refuse

carrying bodies (to which hydraulic tipping gear is to be fitted shortly) would be considered, such units to load the swept refuse into the open bodies.

Machines for road watering under pressure, and gutter cleaners which can disinfect under pressUre are also sought by this customer.

41,152 NEW VEHICLES

IN the first quarter of the year, 41,152 I. new vehicles, other than cars and motorcycles, were registered. The total for March was 13,993, compared with 12,082' in February. Other details are given in the table below.
