PROSPECTS of securing better roads are grim, states the Roads Improvement Association in its 60th annual report, to be presented on June 5. Although improvements were promised when the Minister of Transport set in motion the 10-year road programme in May, 1946, the output of road work for the past year has been 30 per cent, less than was scheduled.
Now county and local authorities have been told to reduce their highway estimates for 1947-8, as grants from the Road Fund will be about 20 per cent. less than last year. This, the Association points out, means that there will not be sufficient funds to deal with outstanding maintenance and further deterioration is inevitable. At the end of the year the condition of the roads will be the worst ever.
