A CONMAN H.AS been jailed for 18 months after admitting setting up a fake transport firm and stealing drivers' identities.

Joseph Timmins of Wolverhampton used these identities to obtain work with other transport firms, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told. He obtained more than £50,000 in benefits and tax allowances and caused driverTony Fleming, to pay an additional £8,000 in tax over five years by fraudulently using his details.

Timmins admitted 10 charges of fraud and perverting the course of justice and asked for 17 offences to be taken into consideration.

William Rickaby, prosecuting, said truck drivers responded to adverts in newspapers and Jobcentres for driving jobs with a haulage firm that never existed.

Timmins stole their identities and used them to get driving jobs. Some victims had to pay speeding fines racked up byTimmins.

Oliver Woodhouse, defending, said Timmins committed the offences because his had record meant that no one would employ him under his own name.

Judge Michael Challinor said: "You are a deeply dishonest man."
