• A Labour government would radically alter the course of public transport policy in Britain, says Shadow Secretary of State for Transport John Prescott. All new transport investment would be judged on a common cost benefit analysis, rather than the present usercost benefit system and Passenger Transport Authorities would be set up with elected representatives.
In a statement published in Public Transport Information, Prescott slams bus deregulation. "It has produced a service that in many areas is dirtier, shabbier, more expensive, less reliable and less frequent."
He promises that under Labour: "Safety standards will not be compromised in meeting financial targets."
