• Ford's new Fiesta van will go on sale on 13 April, just over two months after the new passenger car version was announced. It is offered with a choice of two petrol engines and a diesel. Prices will be announced in early April.
The Fiesta has 22% more load space than previous models, at 0.94m3 DIN. Petrol models have a claimed payload of 400Kg, and the diesel 385Kg. The two HCS (High Compression Swirl) petrol engines are designed to run on unleaded 95-octane fuel. They replace the OHV units on the previous Fiestas and displace one litre and one and a half litres with smaller bores, but larger strokes, than their predecessors. The cylinder heads have been reworked to give greater swirl to the inlet charge, and the inlet manifold has also been modified.
The new diesel engine is the naturally-aspirated version of the SOHC unit that will be fitted in turbocharged form to the Ford P100 later this year. It is already used in the Ford Escort and replaces the 1.6litre engine previously used on small Ford commercials. The one-litre petrol engine is coupled to a four-speed gearbox; the others get Ford's reworked five-speed box.
More powerful brakes, better heating controls and improved handling are claimed for the new Fiesta.
