A PROTEST has been made to the EEC Commission over a £1,465 fine levied by the Belgian authorities because a British lorry driver was unable to produce a T2 customs form.

The firm is refusing to pay the fine as it claims the muddle over the document was the fault of Belgian Customs.

Tory MEP Ben Patterson, in a question to the Commission, said Customs officers in Ostend wrongly kept the T2 form when the driver passed through the port on his way to Ghent.

"No advice or information that he should keep the form for presentation at Ghent was given to him in Ostend," said Mr Patterson.

In a letter to the company, the Belgians say the fine is for non-compliance with EEC transit regulations.

Mr Patterson complained: "While border formalities still exist, Customs officials should low incorrect procedures which subsequently cause serious problems for the importer and exporter."

In reply, the Commission admits this is a "strange case" and promises a full inquiry.
