• Fiat is introducing a new range of medium-weight trucks with nominal gross vehicle weights between 10 and 13 tons. The range replaces vehicles of similar weight previously produced by both Fiat and OM .ompanies, and is expected to be available in the UK towards the end of '73.
There are three basic models and their type numbers designate vehicle gross weight: the 100 (10 tons gross), the 110 up to 11 tons gross) and the 130 (up :o 13 tons gross or 23 tons with trailer).
• All models are produced in various wheelbases and versions, ie truck; truck and trailer; and tractive unit — except for the lightest 100 model which is available as truck, chassis-cab and chassis-cowl only.
The range features a new cab and also shares common vehicle assemblies such as gearbox, clutch and rear axle, though some assemblies have adaptations to meet aifferent vehicle-model performance criteria. The 100 and 110 models are fitted with the Fiat 8060 5.184-litre in-line directinjection diesel engine which develops 122 Dhp DIN at 3200 rpm and maximum :orque of 231 lb ft at 1800 rpm. The 130 model is fitted with the similar configuration higher capacity 8.060-litre OM CP3 diesel engine which produces 145 ahp DIN at 2600 rpm and a maximum lorque of 354 lb ft at 1200 rpm.
Provision for an auxiliary exhaust brake s included with each engine.
Drive is transmitted through an hydrauli:ally operated single-dry-plate clutch and hence to a five-speed gearbox with synchronesh in the top four ratios. For the 100 ind 110 models box ratios are 7.07, 3.87, 2.35, 1.43, 1:1 and 6.7:1 reverse; and hr the heavier 130 vehicle 6.42, 3.71, 1.43, 1:1 and a 5.72:1 reverse. There s provision for a power take-off. There is a choice of single, double-reduction or twospeed axle for most models.
Each model is available with a choice of wheelbases; three with the 100 model and up to five on the 130 class. In addition to each class is the 14.5ft (4.4m) wheelbase which allows a 19.8ft (6m) body to be fitted.
In the 110 class there . is an additional heavy-duty vehicle having a 9.7ft (2.926m) wheelbase.
The new cab is designed for optimum comfort and has doors which open a full 90deg.
The seats have wrap-round backs with four rake positions, the driver's seat adjusting vertically and forward and back; and the passenger seat has a foot rest. Among seat options is a third, centrally placed seat and a "relax"-type seat for the mate.
The dash is covered in non-reflective, sound-absorbing material; all controls, instruments and gauges are located on a panel ahead of the steering wheel. Instruments include brake-pressure gauges and warning lights, water temperature, fuel and battery condition gauges. A warning light illuminates when the engine is over-revved. The laminated windscreen is served by three-blade, two-speed windscreen wipers which are pedal operated.
The cab is anchored to the chassis by four flexible supports which filter out medium and high-frequency vibrations. Interior cab panels are lined with soundproofing material and the floor covering comprises sound insulation overlaid with a rubber carpet. The cab has no projections or sharp edges, and the controls are recessed or collapsible; the leg area is padded in order to give protection.
The suspension uses leaf springs at the front and rear axles which also have double-acting telescopic dampers. The springs are the same length for all models, their arrangement and make-up varying according to the vehicle weight.
Braking is hydropneumatic with two hydraulic and pneumatic circuits working independently. Truck-trailer versions and tractive units have a further pneumatic system for trailer braking.
All metal surfaces have been treated against rust.
