To MINIMIZE the heat reaching the

valve springs is , the object of an arrangement shown in patent No. 882,050. Air is circulated through the valve chamber and the springs have the minimum contact with the cylinder. (Motorenfabrik Hatz G.m.b.H., Ruhstorf bei Passau, Germany.)

The valve rests upon a thin metal dished washer as shown at I. This has little contact with its surroundings so that air can circulate between the washer and the valve guide. The air is kept in motion by a suction pump connected to the chamber which is full of oil mist. This is said to assist in the cooling of the springs. The top end of the valve spring is attached to the valve stem by means of an abutment (2).
