A NEW type of reinforced-plastics NEW
for the transport and storage in bulk of liquids or semi-liquids has recently been developed by Reinforced Plastic Structures, Ltd., Lewes, Sussex. These containers have already been used by the Mobile Oil Co., Ltd., for the bulk transport of grease, each container having a capacity of 1.75 tons.
Almost any size can be made, but the type so far produced measures 7 ft. x 3 ft. 6 in x 4 ft. and weighs 31 cwt. The minimum wall thickness is * in. and is increased to f in. in areas around the centre of pressure. The containers are colour-impregnated and are fitted with stiffening ribs and reinforced base supports. Internal surfaces are completely smooth for easy cleaning, and a follower plate, also in reinforced plastics, is fitted to aid complete evacuation of the contents. An elbow suction pipe and flange are fitted underneath the containers for gravity or forced extraction.
Advantages claimed for the containers are good heat insulation, low weight, resistance to corrosion and easy repair. In addition, the colour impregnation keeps maintenance costs to the minimum.
