QPERATORS from a large area of south-east England attended demonstrations by the Michelin Tyre Co., Ltd., at Brands Hatch, Kent, last week to show the effect their "X" tyres are claimed to have on fuel consumption. The demonstrations were the first of a series to be held throughout the country.
Fuel consumption runs were made over a road circuit with three pairs of cars— Ford Anglias, Vauxhall Victors and Austin A60s—and three pairs of commercial vehicles — A.E.C. Mercurys, Cornmer 5-tonners and Thames Trader 4-tanners. The method adopted with the commercial vehicles was the same as that used on demonstrations reported in The Commercial Motor of April 28, 1961.
The fully laden vehicles each did two runs—one on textile-cord tyres, the other on Michelin "X," the tyres being exchanged between the vehicles for the second run. Accurate measurements of the fuel used were made and the consumptions when equipped with the particular tyres compared.
On each of the commercial vehicle tests the " X " tyres were found to have given improved consumptions —from 15.63 m.p.g. to 16.74 m.p.g (an improvement of 7.1 per cent.) in the case of the Commers, from 15.43 m.p.g. to 18.12 m.p.g. (17.4 per cent.) with the Thames Traders and from 10.86 m.p.g. to 11.97 m.p.g. (10.2 per cent.) with the two A.E.C. Mercury vehicles.
