Total Number of Vehicles Ordered Increased to 1,806

A TOTAL of 406 Leyland 0.600 diesel r`v engines have been ordered by London Transport for installation in new Routemaster buses. -The contract, valued at over 020,000, also includes a quantity of spare parts.

The specification incorporates the design features of the Power-Plus range of engines, together with a number of snecial requirements for this application. The fuel pump and governor settings provide for an output of 110 to 115 b.h.p. at L800 r.p.m. as installed.

Hitherto, apart from two of the early prototype vehicles which have Leyland engines and running gear, all Routernaster orders have called for A.E.C. eng:nes and running gear. Three of the new order for Leyland engines have, however, already been installed in production Routemasters on a prototype bass.

Of the remaining 403 engines, 198 are to be installed in vehicles yet to be built out of the existing orders for a total of 1,448 Routemasters, 199 are to be fitted to further vehicles on order for 1963, and six will be used as spares. All of these vehicles will have other mechanical units of A.E.C. manufacture and Park Royal bodywork.

In addition to the 1,448 Routemaster buses already on order, 68 Routemaster Green Line coaches are due for delivery later this year. These will have A.E.C. engines and running gear and Park Royal bodywork, as will 91 further Routemaster buses now ordered for delivery next year, making up the total intake for 1963 to 290. Over 500 of these vehicles will replace RT buses.
