Wages Clause Alleged to be Ignored. On the ground that some of the haulage contractors appointed by the council, last year, had infringed the fair wages and conditions" clause in contracts, Swansea Council has referred back to the appropriate committee the provisional contracts list.

The complaint in former years by haulage contractors who are members of an association has been that by accepting low tenders the council precludes association members from tendering.

Haulage work at Swansea, pending the committee's action, is carried on under day-rate tenders.

Manchester's Busy Police and Ambulance Fleet.

Manchester Corporation's ambulance and police transport department operates two prison vans, two patrol wagons, a lorry, 12 cars, 10 motorcycle combinations and eight ambulances.

During the past year 5,361 calls for ambulances were responded to and 16,218 turn-outs by the transport section were recorded. The patrol wagons for prisoners received 5,106 calls and travelled 21,587 miles; prison vans, 891 calls and 6,853 miles; light cars, 7,818 calls and 238,169 miles, and motorcycles, 2,403 calls and 152,758 miles.

The road patrol section uses six cars and 10 motorcycle combinations, and during the year the total mileage covered by them was 270,661.

Mr. Daniel D. Sloane, chief officer of the fire brigade, mentions that 963 fires received the attention of the brigade. As compared with the previous year, there was a decrease of £1,359,925 in the amount at risk, a decrease of £67,541 in the amount of loss, and an increase of 117 in the number of fires attended. ' Weak Bridges: Adjournment Plea.

St. Helens highways committee has adopted the following resolution:— "In the opinion of this committee the section of the Road and Rail Traffic Act dealing with weak bridges should not be put into operation until sufficient time has been allowed to reconstruct and strengthen such bridges as are found unable to bear the necessary traffic of the borough and district."
