As well as carrying out random checks to ensure that daily walk-round inspections have been completed by their drivers, managers monitor driver performance through ‘black box’ technology, which highlights sudden braking or speeding while on the road.

“Getting good feedback on how they are performing is a good management tool,” says Stanley. He believes that when a driver fails to meet the required compliance and safety standards, ignorance is usually to blame. “It’s about sitting down with the individual and having an adult conversation to manage the root cause of the issue. It could be a whole range of things. We then develop a plan for them and get it put in writing,” Stanley explains.

He adds that one idea being considered as part of ZAP is to introduce a reward system. “There are a lot of people out there doing their job to a very high standard. We want to reward them for that, and it gives something for other people to aspire to.”
