:3 BURGESS, one of East Sus;ex's best-known haulage firms, las been snapped up by Middlesex iggregates firm Day Group.

As well as the Robertsbridge3ased bulk haulier CJ Burgess, the Jeal includes two associated corn3anies: bulk grain operator David 7hristmas and Rother Cartage. Director John Burgess will stay on Nith the firm for two years.

Day has previously concenTated on the supply of aggregates ind other quarry products for the ;onstruction industry with a fleet )f about 50 rigid tippers. The icquisition of CJ Burgess will dou31e the size of its fleet and change its composition as Burgess specialises in artic tippers.

Day Group MD James Day says the purchase made sense for the firm: "There are undoubtedly a number of synergies but the fact that it was a local firm with an excellent reputation was also highly attractive to us.

"It also means we can take CJ Burgess forward without the responsibility being entirely on John's shoulders. He is 60 years of age and has opportunities for expansion which he is keen to take advantage of without making life more difficult for himself."

Day says there will be no redun dancies at any of the companies: "We are not going in, slashing and burning in order to make cost savings. All the businesses have some very good staff and we want to go in and learn from them —not least from John himself' Last year Day Group turned over f.36m;it hopes the acquisition will boost this to about £45m.
