• Birmingham owner-driver Peter Brothwood,

called before West Midland LA John Mervyn Pugh following a complaint from French police (CM 5-11 May), has had the duration of his licence cut so it now expires at the end of the year.

Brothwood, who trades as P&J Transport, of Dulwich Road, Kingstanding, held a licence for two vehicles and two trailers expiring at the end of November 1995. When the case first came before the LA, it was adjourned to enable him to obtain the assistance of a tachograph expert, Mervyn Pugh not being satisfied about his explanation of French allegations that he had been falsifying tachograph charts.

Mervyn Pugh said that the report obtained from a tachograph consultant stated that in his opinion the alleged falsification could not have occurred. The LA accepted Brothwood's explanation in the light of that report. However, earlier in 1993, Brothwood was convicted at Southampton magistrates of undertaking an international journey without an international journey permit and without an international 0-licence. He was fined £400 with .£30 costs.

Mervyn Pugh directed that the renewal of the licence be considered at a further public inquiry,
