• Stuntman Steve Murty narrowly escaped death this weekend at Brands Hatch when his Skytr-ain truck flipped over during a display, causing extensive damage to the cab.

Murty was bringing down the front of the truck after a wheelie, when the front tyres burst, causing it to bounce against an Armco barrier and flip over. The first people on the scene were truck racing drivers Terry Harris, Reg Hopkins and Brian Garnett, who clambered into the wreckage to turn off the engine.

The Skytrain has no rollover cage and Murty was neither strapped in nor wearing a helmet. He was thrown across the cab, avoiding the worst impact of the crash, but still suffered a broken pelvis.

He is recovering in the Swanley ward of St Mary's Hospital in Sidcup, Kent.

0 The home crowd at Brands Hatch had something to cheer about in the truck racing Superfinal this weekend, when British drivers clinched the top three places. The overall winner, George Allen, smashed the lap record.

Allen (Volvo White) held the lead throughout the race, lapping most of the field and setting the new record with a time of 61.80 seconds at 112.81cm/h. Century Oils' Richard Walker stormed in to second place followed close behind by Rod Chapman.
