• Massive EEC financial help for improving road and rail links with the Channel Tunnel was proposed last week by the EEC Commission when it tabled a transport infrastructure plan calling for expenditure of about 2400 million over the next five years on 12 projects.
The Channel Tunnel is high on the list, with money earmarked for spending in France, Belgium and Britain.
In Britain some of the cash is expected to go on improvements to the M20 and M2 — providing the plan is approved by EEC transport ministers. Two years ago when Britain proposed a medium-term scheme the ministers rejected the idea because the EEC was then going through a financial crisis.
"The objectives and criteria for evaluating projects were agreed and we are more optimistic this time," says an EEC source.
Transport Commissioner, Stanley Clinton Davis will formally propose the plan to the EEC transport ministers in Brussels and Luxembourg this week.
