• I have just read the article in Commercial Motor (9-15 June) "Driver shortage hits one in two". I am a 44-year-old HGV 1 driver, out of work for two years following a knee injury. I have applied to several haulage contractors over the past few months and have been told there are no vacancies.

I have been driving HGV 1 vehicles on and off for the past 31 years and have carried all types of loads, including boats, generators, plant and concrete products. I can rope and sheet, chain and have used safety straps.

I live 10 miles from Portsmouth and 18 miles from Southampton, so if anyone out there knows of any vacancies, please could you let me know. J Martin,
