waived from 1 July. The waiver will apply only to consignments of free circulation status goods, with a value of less than 50,000 ECUs (approximately £36,000) but certain high-risk excise and community agricultural policy goods will be excluded.

To obtain a waiver, the principal must give an undertaking to pay any charges requested by the custom authorities.

TRANSIT TIME LIMITS • A reduction from 14 to 8 days on the time limit for goods travelling under the European transit system will become effective from 1 July.

Customs officers at offices of departure will have the option of reducing this period on shorter journeys and the limit may also be extended in exceptional circumstances, such as strikes and public bank holidays. Traders who participate in authorised consignor or local export control schemes are advised to contact their local excise officer if the new time limits will cause difficulty when loads have to be picked up at separate points.
