If the Government's plans to deal with spray from lorries are ham-handed, the situation in America appears to be worse. From the American journal, Trailer/Body Builders, a copy of which George H. Henderson, sales director of Albert Jagger Ltd, has kindly sent me, I gather that the industry is caught 'Mixt wind and water and nobody really knows what to do about it.

The journal says: "It is a pity that the research work that is being done cannot delve into more of the vast unexplored reaches under the truck. In spite of 20 years' research in splash and spray, no one understands how to control the under-truck air currents and the wake of the vehicle . . .

"It is evident that we have more than a splash and spray problem. We have an underbody air-flow condition complicating a spray problem. As an example, the best spray-suppressant fenders [mudguards] block off the air-flow needed for brake cooling," As one problem is partially solved, another perhaps more serious is created. The road to disaster is paved with good intentions based on inadequate understanding.
