ONLY Leyland's latest Titan was absent from the ranks of the latest generation of double-decker buses at the annual National Travel-sponsored "showbus" rally at Hillingdon, north-west London last weekend.
Over 60 buses and coaches still in regular service took part in the rally, which attracted over 170 entrants from all over Great Britain.
In the working vehicles section, the winners of the Leyland Truck and Bus Silver Trophy for pre-1971 double deckers was Eastern National with its famous Hadleigh depot 1965 Bristol FLF. The runner-up was another FLF, this time an ex-Eastern Natio nal vehicle operated by Hedingham and District Omnibuses.
The pre-1971 single-deck Mercedes-Benz Tankard award went to Midland Red for a 1970 Leyland Leopard bus.
The Commercial Motor Trophy for the best post-1972 double-deck bus went to Brighton Corporation for an immaculate Leyland AN 68 Atlantean with East Lanes bodywork. The runner-up was one of the new generation, the first London Transport MCW Metrobus. The Grey-Green Coaches award for post-1972 coaches went to Ralph's Coaches, of Longford, Middlesex, who also took the runner-up award with two Ford R1114s with Duple Dominant 2 coachwork. Both coaches were in the liveries of separate Heathrow Airport hotels.
The Grey-Green Hillingdon Award for single-decker buses went to Whyte's Airport Services for a Willowbrook Ford R1014. Runner-up was again Hedingham and District Omnibuses with a Willowbrook Leyland Leopard bus.
