Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A Dorset sawmills owner had his operator's licence revoked by Mr J. R. C. Samuel-Gibbon, the Western LA, sitting at Dorchester last week.

He was Mr Richard Turner. of Station Road. Stalbridge, who gave notice of his intention to appeal against the decision.

The inquiry heard that a vehicle examiner found a number of defects in a lorry and trailer operated under a licence granted in July 1970 and issued two prohibition orders.

Mr Samuel-Gibbon also found that Mr Turner had no maintenance facilities available and no records of repairs or inspections on the vehicles.

Mr Turner told the inquiry that the lorry and trailer were used for hauling timber to his sawmills. He said maintenance facilities were available until three weeks before the examiner's inspection when the lease on the maintenance shop ran out.

The records of repairs and inspections were the responsibility of the driver and lapsed when one driver left and another took his job.

Mr Samuel-Gibbon said it was clear the vehicles were not maintained in a good and serviceable condition and he had no alternative but to revoke the licence.

"It is regrettable because the sawmills relied largely on transport. But you will have to get a contractor to bring in the timber," he commented.
