THE SIMILARITY of views expressed by Mr. George Wilmct (Common Room, June 9) and the then president (E. B. H. Elsbury) in his paper to the Institute of Road Transport Engineers Annual Conference 1966—as reported by COMMERCIAL MOTOR are considerable.

We suggested over a year ago "Road Transport contains a formidable number of bodies which exist completely or partly to serve it. A major body might form a panel to produce a national policy. If a reasonably defined line of professional training could be assured then the young man could confidently set out to qualify for a career in road transportation with inducement towards advancement. A new generation of managers qualified in all aspects of transport management would emerge and make a worth while contribution to the industry so closely connected with the economy."

This Institute with 3,500 members has the benefit of the views and experience of one part of the industry. In terms of capital expenditure probably the largest side of the industry since fleet replacement, inspection repair and maintenance is a substantial part of any firm's overall transport budget.

This being the case, while we do not see ourselves trying to establish the strong lead recommended by Mr. Wilmot, we would pledge our assistance to any road transport body that did. It is perhaps too early for the Road Transport Industry Training Board to try and digest this mouthful as well as all the other urgent tasks it has. However, the cap suggested by our president and Mr. Wilmot seems to fit the RTITB better than anyone else? J. A. FLETCHER, Secretary, Institute of Road Transport Engineers, London SW7.
