THE GROWTH of air-road container and pallet traffic—soon to be amplified by giant cargo planes—is prompting much closer liaison between the IRU and the IATA (International Air Transport Association).
IATA is particularly interested in the possibilities of road transport of containers, ex-air freighters under cover of TIR carnets, and wants to co-operate with IRU in an effort to simplify Customs procedure and documentation.
IATA wants greater standardization of air containers and pallets and full interchangeability between road and air transport.
A permanent liaison has been established between the IRU and IATA secretariat and a working party will probably be set up to study the development of air-container traffic and the opportunities it presents to international hauliers.
PORT SERVICES GROW
ROLL-ON/ROLL-OFF services and containers are on the way up—rapidly—at ports controlled by the British Transport Docks Board, according to the Board's annual report "implementation of road plans will need to be accelerated if they are to keep pace with developments in the ports", the Board warns.
