A Fish-carrying Body on a Mercedes Benz Chassis and a Mobile Workshop Trailer
IN the transport of fish, as in most other specialized work, there are certain conditions which must be taken into account in the design of any vehicle intended specifically for this one classof duty. This fact was revealed on the examination of a body recently completed on a Mercedes-Benz' oil-engined chassis by Samuel Jackson, Ltd., of Smallwood, near Sandbacb, Cheshire,
The platform, as well as the sides and ends of the body, are lined with sine 546 sheeting, which can easily be washed down and, which is not liableto corrode from contact with salt water. .In the latter connection it is interesting to note that the sheeting is held in place by nickel-plated -screws and galvanized bolts. In the platform there are six drain holes and each has a nickel-plated flange to which is screwed a copper pipe arranged so as'to convey the salt water from melted ice away to the ground without coming' into contact with any of the adjacent parts of the chassis.
Above the body, is a fixed waterproof tilt cover to which waterproof curtains are attached. These can be let down. and securely strapped to the, sides and qhe tailboard, thus enclosing the load.
Should the lorry arrive at the market too earl. its driver and his mate can snatch a little sleep in comparative comfort, for the cab is of generous width and the back squab can be hinged up and bolted in a horizontal position, thus providing a sleeping bunk.
A trailer recently cempleted by the same concern is for Redpath, Brown and Co., Ltd., the constructional engineering undertaking,. Intended for use as a travelling workshop equipped with a fitter's bench and an arc welding outfit, this trailer has a dropped chassis frame, which, at the rear, provides an unusually low floor level. The side and the rear doors are divided, being, hinged at the top and bottom. In this way additional covered space, is available when the vehicle is at rest.
