Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The Safe Haul unit fits under the dash board with only the key showing. Several of the connecting wires are dummies to confuse potential thieves.

• When thieves broke into Tarmac Roadstone's depot recently, they got away with two Leyland Reivers — but not a Volvo FL7 equipped with the Safe Haul security system.

Unable to release the Volvo's handbrake or to revive its dead ignition, the resourceful villains removed the ignition key with a slide hammer and traced the wiring back to the Safe Haul module. They tried to join wires, split wires, and eventually cut all the wires leading from and to the box. All to no avail: the Volvo remained in situ until Safe Haul's electricians, called out by Tarmac, reset and repaired the system.

The 10cm3 (0.61in3) unit, currently in use with ARC, Express Group, Coalite Group, and the Lex Tillotson Group, isolates the ignition, and controls the supply of air to the handbrake on HGVs via complicated relays and solid state electronics.

A useful feature is that the system will emit a warning buzzer until the driver has deactivated it on starting, and activated it again on stopping. This failsafe feature helped it win Department of Transport approval; now the company is hoping to interest vehicle manufacturers in fitting it as original equipment.

Priced at £295 plus VAT, the device can be fitted only by a main dealer, and fitting is included in the price. Fitting can be completed in less than 11/2 hours for all vehicles and can be carried out during normal servicing.

The latest idea from the company is an internal pneumatic locking device for containers and box bodies. The lock is a combination device powered by the tractor's compressor.
