• Chilled and frozen food producer Bowyers (Wiltshire) has added 16 Mercedes-Benz 6.5-tonne 709D refrigerated sales vans to its fleet.
The short-bonnetted vehicles, on contract hire from Wincanton Vehicle Rentals, have been assigned to Bowyers' distribution depots at Darlaston (West Midlands), Newtown (mid-Wales), Bristol, Carlisle and Aberdeen, where they will join 110 of the nowsuperseded Mercedes L608D models in operation with the company.
The 3.7m-wheelbase 709D chassis gives Bowyers 305mm more loadspace than its previous vehicles, accommodating 198 of the company's product trays — 36 more than before. There is a monitoring and control system to warn the driver of box temperature increases with a digital temperature indicator above the windscreen.
These vehicles will be used in stop-start operations, making up to 40 deliveries each day. They will soon be joined by a further 13 709Ds on a contract split between Wincantons and BRS.
