companies and ferry operator Caledonian MacBrayne, increased its turnover to £183.5 million during 1986 — but suffered a major drop in pre-tax profits from £17.1 million in 1985 to £10.7 million last year. Chairman Ian Irwin says that the drop is largely because of adverse results in the initial period of deregulation, and the exclusion of revenue support payments from one regional authority.
