THE DEPRESSED demand for municipal vehicles has dealt a say blow to Shelvoke and Drewry, which has declared nearly half o workforce redundant.

Shelvoke, a subsidiary of the Butterfield Harvey Group, last week confirmed 230 redundancies at its Letchworth factory in Hertfordshire, leaving its workforce at around 300 and reducing many departments to skeleton numbers.

Before demand for the company's municipal and special purpose vehicles fell, aro 1,200 were employed.

A Butterfield Han spokesman said this week Shelvoke had become ir cient, but was now reach, meet the needs of a redt market.

He insisted that it would tinue to be a chassis builder.
