container drawbar Dinosaur

• A system has been developed by Bradburn and Wedge Ltd, 41 Birmingham Road, Wolverhampton, that enables a Powell Duffryn Dinosaur container to be loaded on a drawbar trailer as well as the towing vehicle and two containers to be carried on the outfit. It was evolved for Gardner Metals Ltd, non-ferrous metal merchants of Old Mill, Staffs, for carrying valuable raw materials and scrap metal on long-distane'e runs to destinations in the North of England and Scotland.

The drawbar trailer for this application was produced by the York Trailer.company while the BLMC Mastiff 16-ton-gross towing vehicle was converted for use as a tractive unit by York Truck Equipment.

A loaded container is picked up from ground level in the normal way by the Dinosaur hydraulic-ram-and-hook system of the 'towing vehicle. The towing vehicle is then backed up to the trailer and the container is pushed onto it by ram action, the lifting frame being raised the necessary amount by the tipping rams. In the final operation, a second container is loaded onto the towing vehicle which is coupled to the trailer. The sequence is reversed when unloading.

The gross train weight of the outfit is 25 tons but may be uprated in due course to ,26 tons. A payload of 9 tons is carried by the towing vehicle while the trailer has a payload capacity of rather more than 6 tons. Unladen weights of the towing vehicle and trailer are 6 tons 3cwt 3qr and 1 ton 12cwt respectively. Each of the containers weighs about 15cwt.
