TEE following particulars are officialiy supplied with reference to applications by bus proprietors for the augmentation of services in the London area :—

During the 12 months ended June 30th last 130 applications were received from bus -proprietors for the amendment of the Restricted Streets Regulations made under Section 7 of the London Traffic Act, 1924, to permit exist ing bus services to be augmented or extended or to allow -new services to be operated. Of these 102 were referred to the London and Home Counties Traffic Advisory Committee, on the recommendation of which 71 have been granted and 24 refused. Seven cases are still under consideration. Twelve cases which were clearly covered by-previous recom mendations of the committee were refused without reference to the committee. In addition, 16 cases were not further considered, because the Commissioner of Police of the Metropelis was not prepared, as the licensing authority rimier Section 6 of the London Traffic Act, to approve the route concerned.

Charing Cross Bridge.

AT last the Charing Cross Bridge scheme is within sight of being executed. The Minister of Transport made the following statement last week:— " As the outcome of a meeting between the chairman of the improvements committee -of the London County Council, representatives of the ,Southern Railway Co. and myself, provisional heads of adeement for the construction of a new Charing Cross Bridge and for the removal of Charing Cross Station to the south side of the river have been settled, with my concurrence, between the representatives of the council and the railway company. The provisional agree merit is subject to the approval of the London County Council and of the shareholders of the railway, company."

American Safety Bill.

TR. H. MORRISON has promised to examine the proviIV_Lsions of the Safety Responsibility Bill to which his attention was called by -Col. Howard Bury, and which has been put forward, in the United States, as a satisfactory alternative to third-party, insurance. It provides for permanent suspension of the licence of any driver against whom a judgment as to payment of damages to a/third party has been delivered and who fails to comply with it.

Revenue From Licences.

THE Minister of Transport states that the approximate number of licences current on May 31st, 1929, in respect of motor hackneys and. tramcars was 102,000. The approximate amount received in payment of licences was 12,224,000.

The number of driver's licences issued during the 12 months ended November 30th, 1928, was approximately 2,527,000, the revenue from these amounting to 1631,750.

London Bus Statistics.

R. PERCY HARRIS recently inquired into the number of motorbus licences which was held in the Metropolitan Police area by the London General Omnibus Co., Ltd. He also asked how many licences were possessed by companies in which the L.G.O.C. had a financial interest, and how many, in June of this year, by other bus proprietors, and the number which was held at the same date in 3924 (the year in which the London Traffic Act was passed). The following official statement was supplied :— The 'best available figures are the number of buses scheduled, which was as follows, on June 30th, 1929 :—

Strictly comparable figures are not available for 1924, but the total number of buses licensed for the 12 months ended June 30th, 1924, was:—
