When the modified system of tolls became operative, it was estimated that Itwould take seven years to collect the sum of 132,500 towards the purchase price, but at the present rate of progress the bridge should become free well within the estimated period. From the takings must be deducted expenses, which are heavier now than they were when the bridge was privately owned.
