Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The dispute with reference to licensing conditions between the South Shields Corporation and the Northern General Transport Co., Ltd., and the Sunderland District Omnibus Co., Ltd. —the two largest passenger-carrying concerns working in the area—will form the subject of a Ministry of Transport inquiry at S. Shields to-day (July 30th). The companies are opposed to certain restrictions which the corporation seeks to impose with regard to the picking up and setting down of passengers within the borough boundaries, and, in consequence, lodged appeals with the Ministry. Summonses taken out against the companies are standing adjourned pending the decision of the Ministry.

Lower. Licensing Revenue in West Riding.

The local taxation licences committee of the West Riding County Council reports that during the six months ended May 31st, 72,950 vehicle licences and 39,004 drivers' licences have been issued. The duty collected amounted to £520,741, which was a decrease of £3,506 compared with the corresponding period of the previous financial year, this decrease being due to reductions in the licence duties payable in respect of goods and hackney vehicles.

On Road Work in Northamptonshire. According to the annual report of the county surveyor of Northamptonshire, the steam rollers belonging to the county council were regularly employed throughout the past year, and were occasionally augmented by the hire of four rollers. The total quantity of material consolidated during the past year was 49,753 tons, at a net cost of £2,415, or 11.65d. per ton, as compared with 13.45th per ton for the previous year.

Of the four steam wagons belonging to the council, three of these were in regular use during the year, and the total quantity of materials transported by them was 24,967 tons, at a cost of £2,628. The quantity of materials hauled by contractors' vehicles was 92,763 tons, the cost being £12,311.

Irish Road Opened to Buses.

The Minister for Local Government of the Irish Free State has made an order permitting the use of the ListowelBallybunion road, from June 15th to c22 October 15th every year, by passenger. carrying vehicles equipped with pneumatic tyres and having seating capacity for not More than 35 persons.

Door-to-shore Travel Facilities.

A scheme which should de much to increase the popularity of the bus services worked between the city and the seaside resorts of Tynemouth and Whitley Ray has just been introduced by the Newcastle Corporation Transport Dept. This consists of a series of " door-to-shore" tickets which enable the passenger to board any tramcar at the stopping place nearest his home and to transfer to a bus at the Haymarket et the same charge formerly made for the bus portion of the journey only.

The licensing committee of the Bournemouth Corporation has granted the following motor-coach licences :— Elliott Bros. (Bournemouth), Ltd. (six coaches) ; Safety Tally-Ho Coaches

(Messrs. Down and Smith) (two coaches) ; Messrs. Clothier and Hayward (two coaches) ; Orange Luxury Coaches (Keith and Boyle (London), Ltd.) (12 coaches) ; Mr. I. A. Newman (two coaches) ; Pullman Roadways, Ltd. (five coaches).

Municipal Orders for Sweepers.

Lacre Lorries, Ltd., informs us that recent orders for its sweepers have been received from a number of municipal authorities, including the corporations of Manchester, Leeds, Wallasey and Wallsend ; the first-named is the fifth repeat order and is for four machines. Oil Filters for Use on A-type Fords.

Owners of A-type Fords will be interested to learn that an A.C. oil filter can be obtained, at the price of £1 is.,

for fitting to existing vehicles. The price of a renewal cartridge is 12s. 6d.; this needs replacement every 7,000 miles. One claim made in respect of this fitment is that the engine oil need

only be changed every 3,000 miles, instead of every 1,000, which is the distance usually recommended. The maker is the A.C.-Sphiux Sparking Plug Co., Ltd., Birmingham.

British-made Lockheed Brakes.• We recently announced that the partners of the Automotive Products Co. had acquired the whole of the interests in the Zephyr Carburetter Co., of Leamington, with the object of concentrating on the manufacture of the British-made Lockheed hydraulic braking syptem. We are now notified that the name of the Zephyr Carburetter Co. has been changed, and that In future it will be known as the Lockheed Hydraulic Brake Co., Ltd.

More Coaches for London-Brighton Service.

The watch committee of Brighton Corporation has granted licences to the United Service Transport Co., Ltd., for 20 coaches for operation between Brighton and London, subject to the conditions that passengers be picked up and set down only at a certain garage, and that a minimum single fare of 3s. be charged.
