Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• With reference to the enforcement of the maximum speed for trucks throughout the EC Mr Rifkind has once again shown that he and his minions are not interested in the British road haulage industry.

The excuse that there was a bomb scare in London can bring an entire ministry to a standstill, is the contempt in which this industry is treated. The loving wish of Mr Riflcind and his counterparts in Europe would be to abolish all road transport in Europe. Pigs may fly.

Therefore, in addition to fitting speed limiters at a cost of £800-plus, the imposition of a maximum 50mph will add cost and time to the industry. It would be some compensation if the ministers would also impose a minimum rate for the work we do, throughout the EC. With all the rules, regulations, and increases in taxes, fuel and so on, the one thing that the industry requires is a regulated rate. If this happens I don't think the ministers will receive any complaints or lobbying.

Personally, I would sack all the transport ministers in the EC, as between them they have not enough experience, and I would replace them with a person with more than 25 years' experience. Preferably me! L Clementi,

Hounslow, Middlesex.
