• During the past 12 months Commercial Motor has been contacted by o number of operators and drivers who want to do their bit for Romania by carrying vital goods and equipment for various charities and organisations. If you'd like to provide transport to Romania contact the Romania Information Centre c/o the University of Southampton on (0703) 593406.
RIC acts as the central clearing house For more than 600 organisations and charities which are working in Romania.
As well as a database on UK organisations, it holds details of similar set-ups in France, Germany and Italy with details of various institutions in Romania who need help. RIC says it would be "delighted if any CM readers would like to provide a truck or van for carrying goods into Romania. We'll have no problem in finding an organisation who could use it!"
However, if any hauliers or drivers are thinking of going to Romania, there are some points to bear in mind: LI As well as an up-to-date passport you'll need a Romanian visa. These can be obtained free on the Hungarian/Romanian border, alternatively you can get one from the Romanian Embassy in London, but there is a charge.
El As sanitation and medical care is below UK standards it is advisable to have booster jabs for typhoid, cholera and tetanus.
All goods carried must be entered on a 11 or T2 form: other forms will have to be completed on entry into Hungary and Romania. LI RIC warns that black marketeers are entering Hungary with goods claimed to be for Romania but then selling them on the black market, so aid convoys could be subject to a bond of up to £2,000. This is repaid by the State Tourist Office on leaving Hungary. If the goods are sealed at Dover this bond may be avoided, but RIC suggests the best solution is to apply for a Certificate of Exemption from the Hungarian Embassy in London which will give a list of contents which can be presented to Customs.
