• Hauliers who are dependent on the Cleddau Bridge over Milford Haven, which links North and South Pembrokeshire, face toll rises of 400%.
Dyfed County Council has called for a meeting with Welsh Secretary David Hunt, and warns that unless he writes off the £12m debt built up in interest charges since the bridge was completed 18 years ago, the HGV toll will have to rise to £4 by 1997. The county council is bound by law to claw back the costs through tolls.
Letterston, Dyfed-based haulier and tipper operator Evans and Williams (Transport) uses the bridge up to 25 times a day and says it is "sick" about the proposal. Transport manager Lain Tite says: "It's going to be a big problem because we won't be able to pass the cost on."
