Amenity lorry schemes have been flowing in since 1973 and the implementation of the "Dykes" Act. It would be a good idea to see how many of these schemes are still relevant, Mr Turner suggested.
Every scheme caused high expenses to vehicle operators and businesses. As many signposts are being changed to show metric weights and measures as opposed to imperial, now would be a good opportunity to check whether the cost was still justified or whether the scheme could in some way be relaxed and the cost reduced.
"What was justified in the past may not be justified in 1982," Mr Turner concluded.
