LOCAL COUNCILS will have to be offered more funds to meet the effects of heavier lorries, the London Boroughs Association has told Transport Secretary David Howell.

Responding to the White Paper on lorries, people, and the environment, the LBA's housing and works committee said it was concerned that no more money was being allocated to local councils to deal with maintenance or to build additional orbital routes like the M25 in order to keep lorries away from residential areas.

Committee chairman Simon Randall said: "Despite what is being said, we believe that this proposal will mean a greater strain being put on London's al ready busy road network.

"Of course we realise the importance of lorries to help London's industries, but unless their adverse effects are recognised, their contribution to the capital will be overshadowed," he added.
