THE Department of Energy hi awarded the Atomic Energy R search Establishment at Harm a further Elm for a three-ye. extension to its research pr gramme on combustic processes.
The aim of the programme to speed up the development new combustion equipmer which is more efficient, less pc luting and can use synthetic ft drocarbon fuels.
The UK programme is part of collaborative venture with tf USA, Italy and Sweden undi the aegis of the lnternation Energy Agency. The technic co-ordinator is Dr Phil Hutchii son, of Harwell's engineerir sciences division.
Detailed aspects of' the ne programme on autoenobile ei gines include the investigatic of cylinder air motion, th chemical events associated WI knock and the chemistry of soi formation.
According to Dr Hutchinsor "There are large gaps in ot knowledge and thus formidab problems in the design of It next generation of vehicle ei gines.
"High-compression petrol ei gines suffer from knock and ti' operation • of all direct-injectic diesel engines is limited by the tendency to form smoke."
