Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Road hauliers and warehousemen who last week formed the anti-Bristow committee to fight the proposed extension of dock workers' territory and rights in London (CM January 23) have this week gone to earth, writes lain Sherriff. By Tuesday afternoon it had cancelled its arrangements with a professional public relations concern.

A member of the committee told me of rumours around the Port of London that dockers were preparing to take action against committee members. Docker shop stewards of the TGWU said no official action was contemplated, though a spokesman was reported as saying that the union viewed with considerable concern the activity of the hauliers and port warehousemen.

The anti-Bristow committee met in West London on Tuesday evening and again in East London on Wednesday. -We are waiting for Mrs. Castle's decision on February 16 before we decide on our next

move", said a committee member.

Meanwhile, the overt opposition to the Bristow recommendations is increasing. As well as objections from road transport and warehousing bodies, the London Chamber of Commerce is presenting detailed evidence of the potential effect on its members. The Chamber met last week and a committee is looking into the whole question. A spokesman told CM: "We are more than concerned; the more we look into it the bigger are the ramifications."

The NAWK has asked its members to write to their MPs opposing the report's recommendations.
