Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The worst is over for the John Dee Group, says group managing director, Andrew Cowie, who made 100 employees redundant and closed six depots this month because of a slump in business.

"I don't foresee having to make further redundancies or closures — we have consolidated our position," he says. "Obviously we are not growing at the same rate as we were two years ago, but the whole economy has reached stagnation point, and the consequent decline in business volumes is beyond our control."

Cowie says the company is still trading profitably — although he admits its 1990 results will be substantially down on last year.

He stresses that rumours of the company going into receivership are unfounded.

John Dee Group has closed depots in Bristol, Sheffield, Ramsgate, Dover and Edmonton.
