• MAN has revised the rear axle ratios on its tractive units and tipper chassis to reduce engine revs at top speeds and give improved fuel economy.
From now on, all 216kW(290hp) and 246kW(330hp) MAN tractive units are fitted with the same 4.04:1 rear axle ratio as the top-of-the-range 16.361 tractor, in place of the previously standard 4.2:1 ratio. The latter now becomes optional.
Fitting the faster 4.04:1 ratio as standard reduces engine speed on a 16.331 tractive unit equipped with an Eaton Fuller Roadranger RT011613 gearbox from 1,838 rpm at 97km/h(60mph) to 1, 766rpm.
A further reduction in engine speeds can be made when the 16.331 with the 4.04 ratio axle is fitted with the Eaton Twin-Splitter gearbox. This brings engine speed down to 1,585rpm at 97km/h.
Following increased demand from operators, MAN is also supplying all 216kW(290hp) 8x4 30.291 VFK tipper chassis with a 4.2:1 rear axle ratio in place of the previous 4.64:1 unit which becomes optional. MAN now has three 16.331 tractive units fitted with preproduction Eaton semi-automatic mechanical transmissions (SAN1T) in the UK. In conjunction with Eaton, it will have a SAMT 38-tonne GCW 16.331 tractive unit, with a fully loaded trailer, available for test driving at the Motor Show in October.
