Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The Ford Turbo 360 truck engine is a significant step forward in the heavy sector of the commercial vehicle market. It produces 10% more horsepower than the average of major competitive engines (150 bhp at only 2400 rpm and 349 lb-ft torque at 1800 rpm).

Ford has more experience of this class of turbocharged engine than any other manufacturer in the country; the Ford Industrial Engine Division has been selling a turbocharged diesel for the last three years with great success, completing a total eight-year development programme.

The new engine has been exhaustively tested under actual operating conditions, by Ford engineers and by many operators, clocking up a grand total of nearly a million miles. Operators report impressive and trouble-free performance, normal oil consumption and improved fuel economy.

Turbo 360 is also extremely quiet; even the most stringent noise level requirements anticipated are fully met. Drivers are more relaxed, more cornforta ble—and safer. The Holset Turbocharger is a highquality, thoroughly-proved unit of great reliability. It more than doubles the air/fuel ratio from 11 to 13 : 1 to 23 to 26: 1, providing more effective and efficient combustion.

Elimination of unburnt fuel reduces smoke emission to a minimum. Turbo 360 meets all known smoke emission legislative requirements.

Strength and lightness are combined in the Turbo 360 to provide the new D1000 series with an outstanding power-to-weight ratio; its total weight is between 245 and 335 lb less than that of major competitive engines. The new Fords are extremely competitive with low kerb-weights and high payloads.

This means that all the extra power goes to the driving wheels to haul more payload. Trips are faster, with no increase in cost.

Inlet valves have great heat resistance. Piston bowls are of 'Gothic arch' design to speed up heat dissipation and give improved temperature control. Each piston has a cast-iron insert in the top compression ring groove. The rings are of taper-wedge design, virtually eliminating blow-by. The in-line injection pump and injectors are specifically designed to provide the correct amount of fuel for the increased air intake.

Special heavy-duty components in the Turbo 360 include a stiffer cylinder head and block; a special manganese chrome molybdenum steel crankshaft of great strength; wide-section connecting rods; and increased-diameter small-ends.

To provide sure-fire starts even down to –20°F, `thernnostare units are fitted; and an extra-duty radiator and fail-safe Cyclopac air cleaner are standard equipment.
